Nowadays it’s just as dangerous to name slaves as slaves.
R. Akutagawa
A Pygmy’s Proverbs (from the Russian translation by N. Feldman)
We did it
Wolfhound Age
Without quotes
And the most powerful moment - meeting with the students from the Territory Festival workshops.
We sat in silence.
And I realised that it was possible
I could do it without abstraction and metaphysics
To say exactly:
Yes!
It was like that!
And it will be again - if you’ll believe what they spin about the history of the country.
And it will be again - while the minister of culture opens monuments to murderers.
And it will be again - while the country wanks and has an orgasm over the slogan “Might is Right”,
And there’s no control of drugs and thieves,
And somebody dares to publish the “Four Stout Hearts” and that putrid list of pseudo-cultural values keeps growing…
And it will be again - while sabre-toothed Cossacks spread their booze-breathed gabble, breaking into a theatre like it’s a field bog-house,
While quasi-orthodox thugs smash exhibitions and sponsor pickets and vandalism.
And it will be again.
And you’ll get up early in the morning, and will huddle with your ear to the door,
and listen as they drag someone down the stairs.
And I don’t want to imagine for how many years you will dream of the child crying in that apartment.
My dear young people!
With us, everything is clear. Bearded creators. Licking each other, rejoicing in mutual understanding.
That public letter was a first warning -
Some signed it, some didn’t
We forget such things.
But how about you?

NOW - 08.11.2013 - The Bridge
09. 11. 2013, 00:38 | by DEREVOSomething happened in Voronezh, something happened in Moscow
I, after a long interval, held some serious master classes. Once more saw young faces, was asked complicated questions, again my faith returned…
And no one wished to part, and we strolled, and slept not, and worked again until bruised and in tears
And now I am afraid of asking – have you forgotten?
Not given up yet?
Are you still working?
Will you continue??
Or give a deep sigh and go back to the habitual?
I am a bridge.
Across me one walks from shore to shore. For everyone – the bridge has always existed. And it always will.
And suddenly – “metal fatigue” (Poncelet was a romantic!)
And the bridge is no more.
Well, man gets used to everything – we shall live on opposite shores…
But that will happen later, not soon.
But now –
Walk across me to visit one another, with bread wrapped in a linen cloth, with sweets for the children…
Pause in the middle, throw a crust of bread, the fish will splash…
You’ll smile!
And in the black roughened mirror of water you’ll hear the song of these execution days
Your humble servant (obs.)

NOW - 24.07.2013 - «Blubber-Oil»
24. 07. 2013, 23:00 | by DEREVO
A message from an artist landed in my inbox. Just like many others which I receive regularly: “I’d like to work with DEREVO”.
I skimmed through the text without paying much attention and instead turned to the attached pictures which I liked very much. Immediately some dance images came to my mind.
So I answered the message and we made an appointment to meet in Moscow. Then I went back to the original message and noticed the small addition at the end: “I’m 15 years old”.
I only had time prior to shooting at the Mosfilm studio. So we met at 7 in the morning in an empty café.
She brought her camera and took some photos.
We spoke as equals, feeling like old acquaintances. I asked her about what was going on amongst young artists.
While she spoke to me about this, we walked at a leisurely pace towards Mosfilm.
We were walking quite slowly indeed; it was a pleasure, something unusual to see in Moscow.
So now,
as far as I could understand, the young are not interested in focusing on the source of a problem. They have a way of elevating an intense experience of reality to a level from where they can project their charged thoughts onto the monotony of everyday life, painting it brightly, as if lit by a spotlight shone from a helicopter’s belly.
And apparently I was seen by this girl like an oil film on the surface of water, able to spread over any possible subject of discussion, even the risky ones.
She called it the “blubber-oil” effect: a temporary taming of the waves.
During our conversation we felt distanced from the pavements and monuments. For an hour Moscow became an unreal cardboard city. I also gained a sense that the Mystery of Art has just been discovered but not yet deciphered.
Assuming that the “helicopter” theory is correct, there’s no need for decryption. The barcode of the Art will be placed on every damp corner of the city (look at her pictures) and will be dissolved in a minute. The Theory-Hypothesis-Null by Rama Michael Tamm has been amended by the “Null-Hypothesis-Null” construction.
She, Valeria Erza, stands with a permanent invisible connection to the others of her own kind. On that morning I was introduced to and easily accepted into this circle.
There’s no name for this “circle-sensation-consciousness” phenomenon. Not yet. To enter you need a password. In my case, my morning indifference towards my own creative work has worked as a password.
And so we both got ourselves some ice-cream which neither of us finished, stopped by the risen sun.

…I wasn’t quite familiar with the russian cinema elite. Now I know a little bit more. And I don’t know how to deal with this knowledge. The best would be as usually with humour…

NOW - 15.03.2013 - in the Middle of White
15. 03. 2013, 23:59 | by DEREVOI was quite full of wonder after my brief visit to Moscow to the Lumiere Gallery.
I hadn’t expected that so many people were still able to walk slowly and speak gently, to look into your eyes and even to listen to you without meddling with their iphones right in front of your face. I’m speaking of the visitors to the exhibition and to my gig there.
The exhibition Time of the Bells is a VERY GOOD one. Thank you to Nastya and all other organisers behind the scenes.
Meanwhile the DEREVO studio in Dresden has been turned into a filming location. A motion picture in progress is:
The Middle of White (working title)

Big thanks to Elena Yarovaya and Isolde Matkey for their support with the boring administrative tasks.

Venice, Perm, St Petersburg, Moscow, Sochi……
23. 08. 2011, 19:02 | by DEREVOOn 8th of September 2011, Anton Adasinsky and Elena Yarovaya will attend the premiere of the Alexander Sokurov’s Faust at the 68th Venice Film Festival. In the film by the Russian film master Anton plays the Usurer or Moneylender as an incarnation of Mephistopheles. Incredible team has been working on the film, including fellow actors Johannes Zeiler, playing Faust, Isolda Dychauk as Margaret and Hanna Schygulla as the Usurer’s wife. With the stunning cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel (”Amélie”, “A Very Long Engagement”, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”) this film is one of ten favourites from the very strong line-up in the run for the Golden Lion.
After this DEREVO travels to Perm, MEPHISTO WALTZ was invited to the “Texture” Festival and then Anton Adasinsky does a three days of workshop.
In St Petersburg Anton performs with the AVIA band then two more MEPHISTO WALTZ performances in Russia come up in Moscow and in Sochi where growing numbers of the world class cultural events should help the city to perfectly slip into its role of the host city for the winter Olympics in 2014.

Anton Adasinsky (from an interview for “Kultura” TV): «They brought 60 children to choose from – everyone a genius. I chose 12, then cut the number down to 10. And they learned our most complicated show in just 4 days, and it’s really complicated with all those anchor points, props and stuff, just a huge pile of stuff… Absolutely genial kids!»

No tickets from Moscow to St. Petersburg. None and never.
Bought myself a place in the conductor’s compartment.
In Tver two young-and-wonderful boarded.
They were sleeping with their heads against the glass in the corridor. I invited them to join me and waited outside while they prepared a bunk.
The girl came out and asked, laughing:
“Do we disturb you?”
“No”, I said.
“Who are you, actually?” – she asked.
I said, “I’m one of the train security,” (bald, black jacket – so she couldn’t doubt it).
“Excuse us, if we get noisy.”
“No worries,” said I, “sing, laugh… should I wait in the corridor?”
“Well, you’ll probably have to wait a long time. He’s like a Roman law, you know, indistinct and very slow.”
We laughed very loud… The guy peeked out.
“I’m coming. I’m running. I’m already there!” she said to him.
I slept quite honest-minded and dreamed of a bi-directional flow of people.
In the morning she catches me up on the platform, laughing again:
“But you’re not from the security.”
“Security?”
“I know you.”
“I know.”
“Do you have echolalia?”
“Echolalia.”
She’s laughing again. Now the chap is here: “Baby, leave him alone!”
Just outside of the train station she turns to me again:
“Did you sleep well?”
“Fine. Rome, Sparta, a kid falling down the abyss; he was too lightweight, not warrior-like.”
Her eyes narrow.
“Anton, right?”
“Yes.”
“Good. So what do you guard there?”
“The secret of Caipirinha.”
And I head for a taxi. I want to dance.
On June 11 and 12 I was on stage with a guitar in my hands and a microphone at my throat. Friendly musicians around me. We called the concert “Vsyo Khorosho!” – “Everything is fine!”

10 days in April
It turned out to be possible in ten days to play “THE GOSPEL OF ANTON” in Florence, fly to St. Petersburg the same night and dance in the “Nutcracker”, meet the participants of the concert “Vsyo Khorosho!” there, go to Moscow and look at the future performance location in “WinZavod”, come back to Italy, get in the car and drive to France to Mikhail Chemiakin, to find there Slava Polunin and to discuss their participation in the “VERTICAL 2008″ project under the working title “One Sky”, then drive to Dresden and start the rigging for WindRose, then move to Berlin and fly to Kiev at the “GogolFest”, meet our entire company gathered there from three countries, dance the “Wolve’s Tango” and return to Dresden together with AKHE to start the rehearsals for “WindRose”… whew, all in ten days..

So we’ve been to Samara, St. Petersburg, Moscow…
Something happened to us or to the people who are here for us.
Now they all really-really want us to be and to live,
Although I’ve had some other plans recently.
And the black cloud is covering the birthmarks and the stubble…
And suddenly, as expected, there’s so much Love!
Not simply, “D’you have any tickets still?”
But crying, “I need it! I flew from Siberia…”
White snow. The colour of the morning alley in a sanatorium just as you’re going out of breath after the nurses’ words:
“There’s a visitor for you.”
“Who?” – you’re pleading – “Who?”
She smiles.
“You’ll see for yourself.”
Pyjamas, a hospital-gown; and sliding down into the park, throwing off a cast of myself on each step of the stairs, a cast of sinful, blabbing and unique me. Then an excuse for the prepared joke: “I love me, me of my own making…”*
Cold hands, a discomfort, where to put those oranges? And then – slantwise into the snowdrift. An incantation.
